Volume 20 of Island Journal weaves together variations on the storytelling theme, with articles on Hollywood’s fanciful depictions of Maine island life, the “real” Sal and Jane who inspired Robert McCloskey’s beloved book characters, and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s little-known paintings and sketches of Casco Bay in the mid-1800s. The 2003 edition also contains stories from Swan’s Island, Vinalhaven, North Haven, Newfoundland’s Bell Island, and Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay.
