Fall foliage and boats don't seem to go in hand in hand, but in Portland, the best way to see the season's colors is to cruise around Casco Bay's islands.

The Portland Schooner Company, based on the Maine State Pier, offers four daily two-hour sails throughout spring, summer and fall. The business operates the Bagheera and Wendameen. Both were designed by John G. Alden and built in East Boothbay; Wendameen in 1912 and Bagheera in 1924. Both schooners are on the National Register of Historic Places. The business also offers private charters: weddings, corporate events, family celebrations and overnights.

On Oct. 10, I joined a hearty group of 20-plus—including some from the visiting cruise ship Serenade of the Seas—to see the scenes the bay offered,
