Pronounced “shuh big”, the island's name means “isle of many springs.” At almost five miles long and 1½ miles wide, it is the largest island in Casco Bay.
After seceding from the town of Cumberland, Chebeague Island became Maine’s newest independent town on July 1, 2007. The community chose to secede to protect the future of its island elementary school, without which it would be extremely difficult to sustain a year-round population. In addition to fishing and local enterprises, a large number of islanders commute to mainland jobs.
