In 1993, Long Island seceded from the City of Portland to form its own independent town, comprising Long Island itself and several smaller islands.

A private barge service for vehicles and freight operates between East End Beach in Portland and the Boston Sand & Gravel ramp on Long Island. The lobster-fishing industry is a cornerstone of the island economy; although many islanders also commute to jobs on the mainland.
