The Island Institute supports students in academic and professional-development pursuits. We firmly believe that these students contribute to the viability and vitality of life in year-round island and working waterfront communities.
Our Scholarships at a Glance
- The Geiger Scholarship supports middle school, high school, and college students in pursuing travel and enrichment experiences such as summer camp, study abroad, semester experiences, and more. — Learn more and check back Fall 2020 for application link.
- The Mentoring, Access, and Persistance (MAP) Program provides transition and scholarship support to students as they navigate steps after high school. — Learn more about the program here. High school juniors may click here to apply.
- The Compass Workforce Grant provides financial support for young adults from Maine’s unbridged islands to help pay for workforce expenses associated with pursuing a certificate or credential that leads to high-value employment. — Learn more and click here to apply.

- The Geiger Education and Travel Scholarship supports full-time teachers and administrators in schools on Maine’s year-round, unbridged islands through funding for off-island professional development and experiential learning opportunities. — Teachers may learn more here and check back in Fall 2020 for application link.
Maine Island Scholarship
New Applicants
Application link will be available Fall 2020—deadline is February 28, 2021.
The Maine Island Scholarship supports high-achieving island students, including non-traditional students, who are pursuing post-secondary education and have a demonstrated financial need. Applicants should demonstrate a high level of commitment to their academics, extracurriculars, communities, and development as leaders. This is a competitive scholarship—not all applicants who apply will receive an award. Five scholarships are available: submit one application, and you will be considered for the following:
- Sweet Scholarship — One scholarship awarded to the top scoring applicant entering their freshman year. This is a $2,500 award, renewable for up to four years.
- Maine Island Scholarships — Awarded to the top scoring applicants as a one-time $1,500 award. Students may apply for this award each year of their post-secondary education, up to four years. Four (4) scholarships available.
- Otter Island Scholarship — $1,000 renewable award to the top scoring applicant attending one of the following schools: Connecticut College, Colorado College, Duke University, Texas Christian University, University of Utah, and Vanderbilt University.

Please note: Eligible students may apply to this scholarship each year of their college career, up to four years.
