Angus, 11: "Islesboro is only three miles by sea and eight miles from our house [in Camden], but it smells and feels different. That lightness. We don't have any of our burdens from here. We're so close to the mainland but instantly—poof!—Magic Land." —W. Hodding Carter, Angus's father.

Patrisha McLean's My Island is a celebration of summer and year-round Maine island children, with more than 100 duotone portraits. The 160-page book—five years and countless ferry rides in the making, she says—is distributed by Islandport Press and is a follow-up to Maine Street, the award-winning 2010 book celebrating the people in her hometown of Camden.

McLean will sign copies of her book on Islesboro on Thursday, July 23 at 2 p.m. at Artisan Books and on Vinalhaven on Saturday, July 25, from noon until 2 p.m.
