  • Being photographed on the boat.
    August 25

The real question is, 'What's island living like in summer?'

I’m curious why tourists never ask what it’s like being a year-round resident in the summer when island populations quadruple, the mailboat is full to capacity, and there is so much more traffic on Mount Desert Island.

    God bless the weeds

Turns out that wood sorrel mixed with domestic sorrel makes a spectacularly snappy sorrel soup.

    Dangerous cargo aboard

The Washington Chambers, which I am sailing with this summer, probably carries more explosive on board than the entire battle group she services.

Oil, water and poorly considered science mix in Destiny

There’s an adrenaline rush to the whole thing, with its chilling scenario of technology and science run amok…

Can oysters save New York Harbor?

Together, they want to establish at least 1,000 acres of oyster reefs by 2030…

A great ocean, considered in great depth

It’s not just that we appear to want to eat every fish in the ocean that we find appetizing; we also seem to want to give a helping hand to other fish-hungry monsters…"

    July 20

I'm Annie, but I've got no gun

Gun culture seemed the provenance of the guy down the road who stockpiled weapons in his cellar and bit a selectman on the ear at town meeting.

Muffins, doughnuts and the little blue house

I heard descriptions of Sadie opening the door of her house and calling out, “I’m fryin’!” on the days she made those delicious doughnuts.

What you hear about lobsters, and what's true

Some Downeast school kids growing up in the early and middle 20th century might have traded a lobster sandwich for a baloney one at lunch time.
