Islands and rural communities throughout the United States pay some of the highest costs for electricity and heating fuel in the nation. They also face several geographic, financial, and awareness barriers that make it difficult to invest in home energy upgrades. These barriers combine to create a market failure we call the “rural energy efficiency gap.” This report provides data about the rural energy efficiency gap, identifies barriers to energy efficiency in rural communities, and highlights strategies that are helping to bridge the gap for residents in cold climate, petroleum-dependent states.

The 8th annual Island Energy Conference brought together island leaders and energy experts from New England and beyond to discuss common energy challenges and the resources available to address them. This year’s theme, Resilient Together, highlighted what islanders are doing to increase the resilience of their energy systems and communities in the face of an increasingly unpredictable world. The 7th annual Island Energy Conference brought together 150 island leaders and energy experts—from 3 countries and 6 states—in South Portland, Maine, on Friday, April 28, 2017, to discuss common energy challenges and to learn more about resources that exist to address these challenges.
